Brooklyn, New York
Constructed over Brooklyn’s busiest rail transportation hub, the Atlantic Terminal Retail Center is a key component in the redevelopment of downtown Brooklyn. The project was designed by Hugh Hardy, Architect with the construction documents prepared by the Ives Group. One of the main design challenges for the client, Hardy and The Ives Group during the initial planning stages for the interior design of this retail building was how to help the retail tenants capitalize on the building’s prime location directly above an underground transit hub that handles close to forty million passengers per year.
The design entices travelers up into the four story mall space by providing interior access into a bright, central atrium with high domed ceilings and a historic Brooklyn motif. By designing economic materials into classical forms and adding dramatic lighting effects, this new space became a thriving retail environment. This project was given a “Best of 2004” award by New York Construction magazine.
