Beth Abraham is a modern orthodox synagogue located in a residential neighborhood in Bergenfield, New Jersey. The congregation initially worshiped in a renovated house. The Ives Group led by Joel Ives, AIA designed a 350 seat sanctuary on the unusually shaped lot, obtained municipal approvals and prepared construction documents that combine an economical design with a building that respects the residential quality of the community. The design follows “halachic” (religious) requirements and has an old world flavor with a women’s balcony reminiscent of eastern European synagogues of the 1700’s and 1800’s. A “Bais Midrash” (House of Study) is provided as well as a multi-purpose room and youth center in the basement.
